Zen Tara Tea was a small company with both a retail operation (selling tea both via the Internet and in its store) and at a 1,600-square-foot location, the Zen Tara Tea Shop, where people can sit and enjoy tea and pastries. The tea shop serves both as a cafe and as the place where the company blends and packages their tea, which is sold under their own label. Some other products which the owners have chosen to sell are also available at the tea shop.
The company was started in 2007 by Guy Munsch and Methee Thavornvongkajorn, originally as a small kiosk in a farmers' market/flea market in Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D. C. They expanded to take over the tea shop, a block from the old location in the farmers' market, in 2010.
The mission of the company is to make quality, organically-grown tea available at competitive prices. Unlike many merchants, Zen Tara Tea does not consider "organic" as an excuse to jack up prices; tea can be bought in their shop at prices comparable to the prices of teas that are not organic.
The company closed down in spring 2014, and Dominion Tea took over some of their products.
