A tea from the Indian subcontinent to which herbs and spices have been added. There are many varieties of chai: as with curry the mixtures of herbs and spices can be prepared by the person or bought commercially. Milk and sweeteners of various kinds (sugars or jaggery).

Western commercial chai preparations tend to include non-traditional components - and there are also chai tisanes.
